Research towards a cure for HIV is a key theme of the 20th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2013), taking place this week in Atlanta. One of the many approaches under study is the use of small molecules to bring resting HIV out of latency, in an effort to ultimately eradicate the virus from the body.

Researchers in the U.S. say that they have identified a case of a "functional" HIV cure in a child infected with HIV who began antiretroviral treatment within days of birth. The child has now been off treatment for over a year, and although HIV DNA has been detected at very low levels in the child’s cells, the virus is not reproducing.

Adding pegylated interferon alfa to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV may help some people control viral replication when they interrupt treatment, according to a small study reported at this year's Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI 2012) and published in the October 26, 2012, advance online edition of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
